Welcome to
FlipArt.
Carla is my given name but flip is my identity, and this is my art.
FlipArt embraces three main areas of focus: American Folk Art, Swedish Folk Art, and Faux and Mural painting.
During my early childhood I learned "women" skills, (weaving, sewing, embroidery, quilting, etc.) which have given me the bases from where my American folk art pieces originate. I have always enjoyed learning a new skill or technique and then applying it in perhaps, a not so traditional way. As an example, I used a weaving pattern for a hand made button to weave a seat in a chair. I am a very tactile person and greatly enjoy experiencing different textures and creating the illusion of reality. Being eclectic, allows me to work in many mediums. Pushing or distorting the boundaries by combining techniques, peak my curiosity for "what if?".
My interest in Swedish Kurbit painting has been greatly influenced from being raised in a Swedish community, and being a tour guide in Sweden. The stories and legends told through the folk paintings bring history to life and preserves today for tomorrow's history.
Large white spaces seem to call out to me for color! I find walls are and open invitation to express ones self. The three areas in which I work overlap and compliment each other. Many of the early Swedish folk paintings were done in homes, as wall murals.
When I look at/experience a person, flower, storm, button, etc., I see individual elements and principles that make up said vision, such as: line, shape, texture, color, shadows, balance, movement, etc. The similarities throughout nature are amazing and delightful to experience. Look at a wilted tulip with only 2 petals left and see the little animal staring up at you. It's a whimsical creature with familiar features.
To Live is to Learn, "Frownie". Life is, continual learning through casual or formal education/experiences. Formal studies include: Salina Area Vo-tech, Bethany College, Goshen College and
Artimatrix.
Speaking on the history of Swedish Kurbit Painting, teaching classes for the Lindsborg Arts Council, or serving as a volunteer in the community, I find great inspiration from daily life that evokes a variety of emotions, and influences my work.
